Made Different on Purpose

Made Different on Purpose

There’s something I’ve been thinking about lately: when did being different become something we were supposed to hide?

Everywhere we look, fashion seems to be moving faster. The same styles, the same colors, the same looks are produced by the thousands. And while there’s nothing wrong with buying something simply because you like it, I’ve always been drawn to clothing that has a little more to say.

At Barbara Fuller Clothing, I don't want everything to look perfect and identical.

I want it to have character.

Give me the faded quilt that has already lived a life. Give me the soft chenille, worn denim, embroidered linens, frayed edges, patches, stains, stitches, and fabrics someone else might overlook.

I see possibility in those things.

Old Doesn't Mean Finished

One of my favorite parts of creating is taking something that might have been forgotten and imagining what it could become.

An old quilt can become a beautiful coat.

A piece of vintage embroidery can become the detail that makes a top unforgettable.

Worn denim can become part of something completely new.

Sometimes the imperfections are exactly what make the finished piece beautiful.

And maybe there's a lesson in that for us, too.

We live in a world that spends a lot of time telling us what we need to fix, change, cover up, or replace. But God has never needed perfection to create something beautiful.

“We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works…” — Ephesians 2:10

I love that word: workmanship.

It reminds me that being wonderfully made doesn't mean being exactly like everyone else.

No Two Are Exactly Alike

When you're working with vintage and repurposed materials, you can't simply order another thousand yards and make every garment identical.

And I wouldn't want to.

The quilt may have faded differently in one corner. The embroidery may have been stitched by hand decades ago. A piece of denim may already have that perfectly worn softness that simply can't be manufactured overnight.

Those differences become part of the design.

That's why many pieces from Barbara Fuller Clothing are truly one of a kind.

You aren't just buying something to wear.

You're choosing something that has been thoughtfully created, touched by human hands, and given a personality of its own.

Wear the Clothes That Feel Like You

I've never believed that getting dressed should be about disappearing into the crowd.

Wear the unusual jacket.

Wear the patchwork jeans.

Wear the oversized sweatshirt with the worn edges.

Mix the lace with the denim.

Wear the old quilt.

And if someone asks where you got it, smile—because chances are they aren't going to see another one exactly like it.

Fashion should be fun. It should tell a little bit of your story before you ever say a word.

There's Beauty in a Second Chance

Maybe that's one reason I love creating with old things so much.

There's something beautiful about taking what has been discarded, forgotten, or considered past its usefulness and giving it another purpose.

It reminds me of grace.

God has a wonderful way of seeing possibility where we see imperfections. He restores. He renews. He makes things new.

“Behold, I make all things new.” — Revelation 21:5

So around here, we're going to keep celebrating the faded, the frayed, the patched, the handmade, and the beautifully imperfect.

We're going to keep creating clothes with personality.

And most of all, we're going to keep remembering that different isn't something we need to apologize for.

Sometimes different is exactly how God intended us to be.
